The American Red Cross started its Home Fire Campaign in 2014, and with the help of its volunteers, it has installed over 1.2 million smoke alarms in over half a million households. A critical part of the program called Sound the Alarm gathers volunteers to canvas neighborhoods and educate people about home fire safety and to install free smoke alarms for those who don’t have them.

This year, AppLovin partnered with the Red Cross for its Sound the Alarm program and our AppLovin Cares initiative donated $25,000 to fund programming for installing smoke alarms and replacing batteries and other supplies. Volunteers from AppLovin will help educate people and install smoke alarms in local communities like Oakland’s Fruitvale and Chinatown districts.

The first Sound the Alarm event was this past Saturday, April 28th, and focused efforts around the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland, California. Oakland Mayor, the honorable Libby Schaaf, kicked off the day with a speech about the importance of fire safety. AppLovin employees were on location in Fruitvale on April 28th and will also be volunteering at other Sound the Alarm events throughout the month of May. The next Sound the Alarm event will be held on May 5th in Oakland’s Chinatown.

An average of seven people a day die in home fires, and this is largely due to non-functioning or nonexistent smoke alarms. This is a tragedy that can be prevented, and the employees at AppLovin are happy to do their part to help. If you’d like to help the American Red Cross prevent home fires in your local neighborhoods, you can volunteer or donate to the Sound the Alarm program here.
